BE Changemakers is a fully-funded programme for young environmental activists, innovators, and creators.

Starting January 2022, The BE Changemakers programme will work with a (select) group of 16 & 17 year olds as they develop and launch their ideas for environmental action.

Your project could be focused on animal conservation, increasing biodiversity, sustainable food systems or green energy. You might want to focus on environmental education, raising awareness, policy change, a practical project, or a new invention or product? Maybe you’re a filmmaker, musician, artist, comedian or want to create a theatre piece? It’s completely up to you! The main thing is that you are passionate and determined to progress your idea or current project.

Develop creative thinking to move past limitations and think big. Re-imagine aspects of your action, so it gets to be fun, focused and high impact.

Explore social justice issues and cutting edge environmental topics.

Learn the art of impactful storytelling, so you can share your action with impact. We will also share and amplify your message on various Bertha Earth media channels and through partner networks throughout the year.

We will also invite you to take ownership and lead aspects of the programme throughout the year.

You will need to be:
Based in the UK
16-17 year olds (born between 01/09/2004 – 31/08/2005)
Have a well-formed idea or working on a current project
Passionate about protecting our planet

How old do I need to be to join BE Changemakers?

To be eligible for the programme, you will need to be born between 1st September 2004 and 31st August 2005. If you have any questions about eligibility, please email [email protected].

What is the time commitment?

Each call will be 1-1.5hrs long. After that, we would recommend that you spend a minimum of 1.5 hrs a week to further your action in addition to calls – even more, is better.

When are the online calls? Do I need specific equipment?

The calls start on the week commencing 10th January. The date of the calls will be determined by the availability of those selected for the programme. In the application, you will be asked to share your availability. 

The first four calls will be weekly, they will then transition to fortnightly and then every three weeks. A full timetable will be shared once you get a place on the programme. 

All calls are on Zoom.

You will need to have access to the internet and an internet-enabled device.

You will need a camera and microphone (if you can’t access this, we can provide equipment for you).

Can I apply as part of a group?

If you have an idea or are currently taking action with a group of people, we will accept up to 2 members from your group.

Do I need to be able to attend the retreat?

Yes, you do need to commit to the full programme to be eligible for BE Changemakers. 

When and where is the retreat? 

The retreat will be five days/ four nights on the week commencing 25th July 2022. It is UK based, and the location will be shared with successful applicants. 

What do I need to be able to attend the retreat?

If you are travelling from Northern Ireland or Scotland, you may need an ID to travel to the retreat centre. All costs for the retreat will be covered.
